SERIES DESCRIPTION: Raymond Burr played the part of Robert T. Ironside. He was a 25 year police dept veteran who rose to the position of San Francisco's Chief of Detectives. An assassination attempt on his life left him paralyzed from the waist down. Consequently he was wheel chair bound and traveled in a specially modified police van. Ironside was the first prime time TV show character with a "handicap" and was much praised by critics and advocates for the physically challenged.
Commissioner Randall, played by Gene Lyons allowed Ironside to fight crime as a Special Consultant. He was given two assistants. Sgt Ed Brown played by Don Galloway and Eve Whitfield played by Barbara Anderson. His aide and bodyguard Mark Sanger was played by Don Mitchell he later became a lawyer on the show.
In all, NBC aired 199 Ironside episodes between 1967 and 1975. In 1993 Ironside returned for a made for tv movie called “Return of Ironside”, reuniting the entire cast including Barbara Anderson and Mark Sanger returned as a judge.
